Farmhouse decor is HUGE right now (thank you Chip & Joanna Gaines) and I love it because it gives you a gently “lived-in” look that is comfortable and homey feel. It’s also easy to find great inspiration for DIY projects. I was visiting my mom in Michigan this past weekend and stopped into Kirkland’s and found a ton of great stuff!
To achieve the farmhouse style, you’re looking for rustic materials like galvanized steel and old barn wood…basically anything that looks like it was up-cycled or re-purposed in some way. Look for things with chalkboard prints or designs and find pieces that are distressed with a weathered texture or appearance. This style tends to be rooted in a more natural or muted color palette, so lots of creams, browns, and grayish shades in the blue and green color families. You can get a good idea of these types of products from my Pinterest Board and also from my style board below.
I’ve also been looking for some inspiration on what to do with the old windows we pulled from the red house and I think these really stood out to me.
I love a good quote (who doesn’t) so, I am going to try and clean up the frame and hand-paint a quote in script to see if I can’t achieve a similar look via DIY project. Not that the $20.00 price tag is outrageous…I think it just gives me a purpose and the result will be a more custom piece. I’ll let you know how that goes and I’ll post a tutorial in case you’re interested.
